(above) Ziyaad has shown great improvement in a short amount of time. I am truly excited to see how he grows. Ziyaad ran his best run with the blue Altezza due to Chris being a clean drifter and allows for a fun tandem.

(above) This literally says , no matter how much we want each other's blood on track... off track we the greatest of friends. We understand the true essence of sportsmanship.

    Round Five...
Going slightly nostalgic with this round. Who remembers the end of Cassettes and the transition to Compact discs? Who remembers popping in DVD's instead of VHS cassettes? And how about that time when the world was going to come crashing down when the clock struck 12 on the 1st of Jan 2000?

This was what many called the golden era of many things, well not so sure about fashion but hey what do I know about that haha. It was indeed the golden era of drifting, the early days of it becoming a judged sport instead of a get together on top of the mountain passes in many prefectures. We got to witness these on a dvd we got from one of our friends which they got from somewhere... most likely ripped from a Option video. We saw these cars sliding out of control to the tune of rave music, it seemed to fit this style of motorsport perfectly due to it's outrageous in your face style of driving. Bright coloured cars with flashing underglow to neon coloured wheels, it was the time when the world feared the invasion of aliens and alien gimmicks were being sold at every shop.

Round five we going to look back at this era and try and bring this whole feel to TDF.

Sorry all, things have been crazy at work ... im sure you understand right?!
Anyway i want to speak about what is happening now in the RC drift scene in SA. Ready for some hard hitting facts and some "i don't believe he just said that?!" stuff ?

So it's YD world , buy chassis build it and get podium... that's lovely right? Sure it is and those that could not get around one corner before are now class winning drifters, again that is pretty and as the saying goes if you cant win them then join them. Unless you brave enough to say you know it's more than just a pretty new era chassis and skill is needed and bring what you have and leave with what you got. I admire the brave, it is them that teach us a lot and it is the brave that are the ones that are truly diamonds in the rough... YD world or not when all get YD's ( some conspiracy stuff- one world is being pushed hehe ) as we have been brainwashed (through media/friends) to all like the same things so that more of similar items can sell. Look at the new cars, from BMW to Honda I cant tell them apart these days... they call it a GLOBAL design.

    (above) Same, same but different...

So are we followers or leaders? SA's drift scene has always been followers of the international scene (even though we were one of the first to do RC Drifting) and mainly USA and Europe, very few followed Japan and i found this weird, but media makes up peoples mind...why i love writing these stories (smirking) as i can make you think something that you did not want to think about ,but back to the point i want to make, we surely all can't have YD's can we? One side people will say but it's how you set yours up and your skill, sure i hear you but once i get a good setup I will share this with whoever and next thing the whole of SA will be running same same. What will set some apart is their skill level for sure, something nobody can take away from you... if you know setup and style and understand drifting you will obviously be the better drifter, but you still just like your opponent a YD drifter.

I hear some saying but that is not a bad thing (is that your brainwashed mind speaking or yourself? haha) and I agree it is not as knowledge can be shared and parts can be borrowed and or shared or group bought etc. Biggest advantage is everyone will have an equal shot at doing well. That might be an advantage for many, as for me that is not rewarding... using a tt01 (being one of the last to compete at national level) and taking podiums in a sea of CS (then was the Sakura craze) cars it was a huge challenge to get same angle and some (well a bit more than normal) counter steer from a 50-50 and whether i lost or won it was a good feeling knowing i put what i have learned to use. So this YD world, should we embrace it or have a drift scene where we see different chassis being put up against each other?

    (above) a Long road ahead...

Problem is what is good is expensive and what is not so good will end up being expensive once you throw all the cool parts at it... sure this is a hobby but we not getting any new kids jumping into this at the rate it use to happen at. So should we not be offering some alternatives to the YD's? The thing is a YD is just amazing (no im not being paid to say this) for the price and the quality and let's not talk about it's ability and agility. I have had experience of drifting most YD's (rwd) and I built one for a good friend of mine and i slapped the thing together in 3 hours (including crap talk) and i enjoyed building the gearbox the most, and without checking to see if cambers are all correct etc, with a very under powered brushless setup I managed to drift it as well as my setup which i have been setting up for two years now (actually sadly funny). Not bad mouthing my Eagle, if i stop wanting "the perfect" setup it will hold it's own against a YD on any given day but that is because I have been doing this for close to two decades...

(above) Follow the rest or get lost...

Let that sink in, so the YD is something for the kids of today and i guess for the skilled... but do you blame me for wanting some variety? Imagine going to a drift event (real cars) and only seeing e30 bmw's (urgh, they disgusting cars especially with that pig nostrils up front, im writing this story i can say what i want haha) it would be boring and simply put downright annoying, and yes same sentiments if there were only AE86's (they not disgusting though imo) so then what is out there that is equal to a YD?

(above) Do we leave what we once knew behind?

Or do we accept we in a ONE WORLD era? When you watch tv, etc. you find everyone looking the same ,thick fake eyebrows , same fake nails, same dress sense, speak the same (Kim K style), oversized long ass tshirts, running shoes when they going to watch a movie ...i can go on and on and I am sure you know what im speaking of but are you realising it, is a whole other question. We can apply this to cars as well and i guess social media is helping create this one way of thinking and I guess it's called trends but certainly not everyone doing the exact same thing and looking like they come from one mould?

So in my personal opinion (above is not my opinion but a thought provoking piece) I would love to see different chassis' but the prices of some chassis' i cant agree with my own opinion. Where is Tamiya, yes you ,who use to make entry level drift chassis' that could hold its own for a fraction of the high end chassis'. Eagle you could have stepped up and rivaled YD but NO. Overdosing, seriously i can buy a real car for that price.

I certainly will do my best to be different but it will not make sense financially... I am at a split in the road and I am sure many others too. There is just no other option currently, do we wait for next year? There is no word of any other manufacturer making a YD rival (price and quality, etc) and if we wait too long we going to miss out on close tandems. Or you can drop money into your current non YD chassis and see how far you get...im doing the latter and I am struggling. Tried everything even using oil and it is just not stable or agile enough.

Would love to hear your biased and unbiased opinions and let us know what else is equally brilliant as a YD?

very interesting Robin.....the evidence certainly is clear that the YD-2 is EVERYWHERE......i believe we had the same phenomenon when the sakura d4 came out? you got to give it up to Yokomo's marketing though and that they have skilled drivers to further promote their products....with that being said though the yd-2 is not the be all and end all chassis (as good as it is out the box) and perhaps this fact is a huge selling point? out of the box its really good?

I really think that the new mst rmx-s is a great contender to the yd-2 it has a wide range of adjustments and layout premutations, it also has a high motor mount version too and if we delve into MST's R&D cycle we see that they produce more versions than most other brands out there. Im not bad mouthing the yd-2....i love the yd-2 ....ive loved the yd-2 from the time they released the sneak pics and have been following it ever since. Ive usually been one to have a chassis like no other....like my streetjam ota r31 gold carbon and now my d-like evol....i swear im so tempted to buy the RE-R hahah

Ive heard really good things about the Yeah Racing hpi sprint rwd conversion kit BUT i havent seen anyone locally giving it a try....ive seen the capability of a well tuned sprint (as im sure you guys have also seen) so it would be very interesting to see how it stands against the YD revolution.

Thanks for the informative reply. What is the cost of the mst?
